Background: Through work-experience we have found that referrals without sufficient indication are a persistent problem that affects the workday of radiographers and radiologists. Such referrals are time consuming and can potentially cause unnecessary radiation to patients. Purpose: Elucidate how various factors affect the way radiographers and radiologists handle referrals without sufficient indication. Method: Qualitative method was performed using the focus group technique. Four radiographers and three radiologists at St. Olav's Hospital were interviewed. In total, two focus group interviews were executed, with one profession in each interview. Results: Radiographers and radiologists handling of referrals without sufficient indication varies greatly. The factors that seem to influence their actions the most are the patient's age, the way of communication between the professions, time pressure and professionalism. Conclusion: Under examination of children, radiation protection is more emphasized than under examination of elderly patients. Radiologists also aspire to secure the patients impression of the health care system and perform unwarranted examinations as an result of this. Geographical proximity between radiographers and radiologists proves to have an impact on how referrals without sufficient indication are handled as well.
