In 1974, the Norwegian Labour-led government proposed self-determined abortion. This led to several vigorous reactions and campaigns by those who supported the existing abortion law or argued that the law should be stricter. Anti-abortion activists organized themselves in The People’s movement against self-determined abortion (Folkeaksjonen mot selvbestemt abort) and had the support from Norwegian Christians. The debate was harsh in September and October before the Norwegian Parliament on 31th of October voted on the proposal for self-determined abortion. Through discourse analysis, this bachelor thesis will examine the language of the anti-abortion activists. The spotlight will be on The People’s movement against self-determined abortion, Norwegian Christians and others who had a connection with the anti-abortion movement. The bachelor thesis will focus on September and October 1974. The primary sources of the thesis are newspaper articles from two Christian newspapers: Vårt Land and Dagen. These were important channels for the anti-abortion activists.
