Kritikken av Fifty Shades of Grey Den gode og den dårlige BDSM

Abstract

I denne oppgaven har jeg intervjuet praktiserende BDSM-ere som er organisert i Norsk forening for sadomasochister og fetisjister – SMiL. Oppgaven handler om informantenes resepsjon av Fifty Shades of Grey: Fanget, den første boken i trilogien Fifty Shades of Grey. Boken som ble skrevet av en britisk forfatter Erika Leonard, kjent under pseudonym E.L. James, ble solgt i mange millioner eksemplarer på en kort tid. Fifty Shades har vekket masse oppmerksomhet og stor debatt i media mye på grunn av eksplisitte erotiske scener med BDSM-elementer. Boken ble også mye kritisert på grunn av sin fremstilling av BDSM. De organiserte BDSM-ernes kritisk lesing av Fifty Shades of Grey ligger til grunn for oppgaven. Oppgaven er basert på seks kvalitative intervjuer med praktiserende BDSM-ere. Den består av tre analysekapitler som undersøker ulike aspekter ved informantenes kritikk av fremstilling av BDSM i Fifty Shades of Grey: økonomiske og sosiale forskjeller mellom partnere, kommunikasjon- og nettverksmangel. Et eget kapittel handler om den Gode BDSM. Kapittelet inneholder narrativet om den Gode BDSM som trer fram gjennom informantenes kritikk av Fifty Shades. Funnene i oppgaven viser til at BDSM ikke begrenses kun til seksuelle aktiviteter og kink. BDSM-forhold har grunnverdier, bl.a. samtykke, fungerende kommunikasjon, omsorg for partneren og likestilling, som gjelder også andre form for forhold. Oppgaven kan ses som et innspill i oppfatning av BDSM og den norske debatten om sex og samtykke generelt.

In this thesis I have interviewed practicing BDSMers who are organized in the Norwegian Association for Sadomasochists and Fetishists - SMiL. The task is about the informants' reception of the first installment in the Fifty Shades novel series. The book that was written by a British author Erika Leonard known by her pen name E.L. James, has topped best-seller lists around the world, selling millions of copies worldwide. Fifty Shades has attracted a lot of attention and raised debates in the media mainly because of explicit erotic scenes with BDSM elements. The book was also widely criticized for its presentation of BDSM. The critical reception of Fifty Shades of Grey by the organized BDSMers underlies my project. The thesis is based on six qualitative interviews with practicing BDSMers. Thesis analysis consists of three chapters examining various aspects of informants' criticism of the reproduction of BDSM in Fifty Shades of Grey, such as economic and social differences between partners, communication and network shortages. A separate chapter is about the Good BDSM. This chapter contains the narrative of the Good BDSM emerging through the informants' criticism of Fifty Shades. The findings in the thesis indicate that BDSM is not limited to sexual activities and kink. BDSM relationship is based on common values such as consent, communication, caring and equality, which also apply to other forms of relationship. The thesis is considered as an input in the debates about BDSM and the Norwegian debate on sex and consent in general.
