Knowledge about the erosional history of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet is important to reconstruct pre-glacial Antarctic landscapes, which in turn may aid in understanding past and future fluctuations of the ice sheet in response to a changing climate. The ice sheet is dynamically linked to the underlying topography, and a better understanding of Antarctic subglacial landscapes helps for example when modelling ice sheet behavior. In this study, two East Antarctic regions are examined: Sør-Rondane mountains with the adjacent polar plateau, and the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains with the adjacent Lambert Rift. The used datasets, consisting of georeferenced point data derived from airborne ice-penetrating radar, were gridded and analyzed by utilizing hydrological modelling and geomorphometric approaches, including hypsometric analyses, valley connectivity analyses and basic modelling of basal temperatures. Longitudinal and cross-sectional profiles were extracted, and the degree of glacial modification assessed. Results from both areas indicate a high degree of subglacial preservation. No conclusive glacial valley breaches (valley capture) were discovered, with significant glacial modification found only in deep troughs with channeled ice flow. Stepped long profile valley morphologies were found in all basins, possibly incised by local alpine glaciations predating the cold-based ice sheet. This is supported by hypsometric analyses which show a predominantly (alpine) glacial signature. On the plateau adjacent to Sør-Rondane, topographic cross profiles reveal a predominantly fluvial valley system where glacial modification occurs at lower reaches of trunk valleys. This may indicate preserved locations of old equilibrium line altitudes of valley glaciers, with time of incision constrained to before ~34 Ma. These findings may aid in reconstruction of past ice sheet extents; however, data of better spatial resolution is needed for conclusive mapping.
