2000-tallet er en tid i populærmusikken hvor mange artister vender blikket tilbake i tid, gjerne til en tid da de selv ikke har levd. I boken Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to Its Own Past forteller Simon Reynolds om en stor interesse for fortiden som ble inspirasjonskilden til mange musikere. Amy Winehouse blir nevnt blant retroartistene. Hennes musikk og image skapte diskusjon og kritikk, der noen mente at hennes musikk var bare en kopi av svarte artister. På den andre siden fantes det millioner som ble forelsket i hennes stemme og persona. Denne oppgaven forsøker å svare på spørsmål rundt Winehouses besettelse av fortiden, og hvordan den har preget henne som artist. 21st century is a time in popular music where many artists turn their gaze back in time, often to time when they did not exist themselves.
