In the energy industry, major changes occur due to high costs, varying oil prices and a great deal of uncertainty related to global mechanisms. To be competitive and profitable at all times, many companies, such as Equinor, have chosen to implement Lean. Companies that introduce Lean often focus on methods and tools, which will be essential. However, only when the organization has created a culture of continuous learning and improvement can the understanding of Lean become accurate. By the end of 2018, approximately 75% of Equinor had implemented Lean. The research and technology (R&T) department at Equinor will be among the last to go through this implementation. Other companies that have successfully implemented Lean in their R&T department have, among other things, reduced the cycle time and significantly improved the delivery precision. This thesis explores the use of Lean in the Equinor R&T department and focuses on one of the most important processes in the department, which deals with everything from idea to product. In order to give Equinor a foundation for improvement and to achieve better insight into the use of Lean in the R&T department, the project group has, among other things, conducted interviews with employees. Through literature study and data collection from Equinor, the project group has gained insight into the workday of employees, charted the opportunities and challenges that exist in the R&T department, and discussed how Lean can contribute to exploiting opportunities and managing challenges. This thesis has identified several challenges with Lean in the R&T department at Equinor, related to employees, cycle time, resistance to change and customer involvement. Even though there are several challenges with the use of Lean in the R&T department, the project group has concluded that Lean can have several benefits. Some of the benefits Lean can give are: • Improved processes which can increase efficiency, flow and profitability • Employees having greater influence on their own workday, which can lead to more motivation and empowerment • Looking at the entire value chain, creating collaboration across the departments and thus avoiding silo thinking • Increased focus on customer value and customer involvement • Good indicators to measure process flow, which can provide faster feedback • Making the work more visible There is great potential in Equinor's R&T department, and it is argued that Lean can contribute to exploiting this potential. We see the opportunities Lean can provide the R&T departments when it comes to engaging employees in creating a culture of improvement. In conclusion, Lean in the R&T department at Equinor can contribute to innovation, which in turn can result in a competitive advantage. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that Lean is a continuous process. It's about the mindset and culture, not just the tools and methods.
