Søkeord som ble brukt: yoga and depression, yoga and anxiety, yoga and depression and anxiety, yoga and depression and anxiety and improving, yoga depression and treating, yoga-therapy and depression and anxiety, og Psychotherapeutic yoga.
Issue What advantages and disadvantages exists, and which dilemmas can occur in relation to use of yoga therapy for adults with a diagnosis of anxiety and/or depression? Method This thesis is written as a literature-study, where medical literature, research papers and own experiences are used in the discussion of the thesis. Search-phrases that are used: Yoga and depression, yoga and anxiety, yoga and depression and anxiety, yoga depression and treating, yoga-therapy and depression and anxiety, and Psychotherapeutic yoga. The searches was done in the following databases: PubMed, Medline, Oria, Eric and Svemed. Findings Based on the results that emerged during the analysis of the five research papers assessed in this thesis, there were identified 4 factors that have an impact on the effect for yoga therapy to have the desired effect in regard to anxiety and/or depression. These factors are: simultaneous drug therapy, therapist and patient relationship, the importance of the yoga teacher`s qualifications, and the yoga therapy seen in a social perspective. Conclusion Under proper circumstances and with qualified yoga teachers, the present literature provides a careful optimism over the effect of including yoga therapy as treatment for anxiety and/or depression. When the mentioned factors are present, yoga therapy is associated with an improvement in psychological and cognitive functioning. Yoga will therefore be able to supplement the standard treatment of patients with diagnosis of anxiety and/or depression, but to scientifically conclude that yoga therapy is an effective treatment for these diagnoses, more high-skilled studies are needed.
