Tiltro til Louis Theroux i møte med en kontroversiell familie

Abstract

Dokumentarfilm er populært innenfor filmmediet. Den gamle tradisjonen har som vane å se på dokumentarfilm som en korrekt gjengivelse av virkeligheten. En film som skjuler produksjonen, og hvor objektivitet stiller sterkt. I nyere tid har det derimot vokst frem en plass for dokumentarfilm som vektlegger det subjektive og en synlig produksjon.

Louis Theroux fungerer som dokumentarist i sine filmer. Dette preger fremstillingen av miljøene han undersøker. Med utgangspunkt i filmen The Most Hated Family in America (O’Connor, 2007) hadde jeg et ønske om å se på graden av hans subjektivitet og hva dette faktisk gjorde med fremstillingen. Hovedfokuset ble rettet mot samtaler og forholdet mellom dokumentarist og subjekt. Målet var å finne ut hvorfor vi har tiltro til Theroux som historieforteller i denne filmen.

Documentary films are popular within the film medium. In traditional forms the documentary is considered as a correct representation of reality. Hence, a film that hides the production, and where objectivity is important. In recent times however, it has emerged a place for documentary films that emphasize subjectivity and visible production.

Louis Theroux works as a documentarist in his own films. This characterizes the representations of the environments he investigates. Based on the film The Most Hated Family in America (O´Connor, 2007), I had a desire to investigate the degree of his subjectivity and what that actually did to the representation. The main focus was aimed towards conversations, and the relationship between the documentarist and the subject. The goal was to find out why we have faith in Theroux as a storyteller in this film.
