Endringer av nyhetsinnhold over tid gjennom digitalisering av norske aviser

Abstract

Hensikt: Tekstens hensikt / problemstilling, er å se på om hvorvidt det har vært en endring rundt hvilke saker som blir plukket opp for norske aviser, med et langsiktig overblikk i henhold til digitalisering og teorien om nyhetsverdier. Er det en endring i hva som blir publisert på nett og i fysiske aviser, og har det forandret seg over tid? Hvilke kategorier dominerer? Metode / teori: Oppgaven kommer til å samle inn artikler fra Aftenposten og Dagbladet gjennom bruk av kvantitativ innholdsanalyse, for å sammenligne nyhetsinnholdet første mandag i Mai, i 2018 og 2008. Funnene vil bli brukt som grunnlag for analyse og refleksjon. Innsamlingen vil foregå basert på teoriene om nyhetsverdier av Galtung og Ruge, og Harcup og O´Neill. Oppgaven vil også støtte seg på teoriene til Postman og McQuail.

Resultat: Mens mange av kategoriene har holdt seg jevne, kan man se forskjeller, både på hvordan nyhetsinnholdet har forandret seg i aviser over tid, og forskjeller på mediene. Man kan se større tvetydighet og relevanse på nett, og særlig den sistnevnte holder seg stødigere på digitale versjoner av avisene enn i fysiske. Når det kommer til dominerende kategorier er det Nyhet og Sport, men det er også en del myke nyheter som må regnes med som en del av et balansert nyhetsbilde.

Konklusjon: Man kan si at det har vært en liten endring i hva som blir plukket opp over tid, og basert på datainnsamlingen fra de valgte dagene har denne oppgaven funnet at det er større sannsynlighet for at de valgte avisene skriver relevante nyhetsartikler på nett.

Purpose: The text will take an in-depth look at whether or not there has been a change in the news content of Norwegian newspapers over a ten-year span, in relations to digitalization and the theory of news values. Is there a difference in what gets published online compared to physical editions on the same day, and has it changed with the popularization of online newspapers? What categories dominate the mediums?

Method / theory: The text will gather articles from the newspapers Aftenposten and Dagbladet through quantitative research, in order to compare the news content published the first Monday in May, both in 2018 and in 2008. The discoveries will be used to form the basis an analysis and reflection. The categorizing of articles will be done according to the theory of news values by Galtung and Ruge, and Harcup and O´Neill. Theories by Postman and McQuail will also be used to explain findings.

Results: While a lot of the categories stay somewhat the same, there are differences in both how news content has changed during a ten-year gap and on the different mediums. There are more unambiguous articles online, along with articles classified as being relevant for the target audience to know, and the latter value stays steadier in the digital version of the newspapers. The data found that the two dominating categories was news and sports, but there was also a bit of ‘soft news’ that has to be expected in order to maintain a balanced newspaper, whether its online or in physical editions.

Conclusion: There has been a small change in what gets picked up over time and based on the findings done on the selected days we can see that it is easier for newspapers to stay relevant online. New technology has given new opportunities, and while previous theories dictate that this should lead to an increase in nonsense news, the data in the text shows the opposite. A part of a newspaper, online or physical, will always have some ‘easy’ articles within categories such as entertainment or personal, but the increase of online journalism has made it easier to stay on point, by releasing information as it comes along.
