Sammendrag Fagfornyelsen står for døren. Nøkkelord: Bærekraftig utvikling (BU), undervisning for bærekraftig utvikling (UBU), handlingskompetanse, videreutdanning.
Abstract We are facing a renewal and improvement of the national curriculum. Sustainable development is one of three interdisciplinary topics of the core curriculum that constitute the values and principles for compulsory education. The objective of the topic is to promote pupils becoming citizens that are able and willing to contribute to a sustainable future. In order to reach that goal, developing the pupils’ action competence is vital. The aim of this study is to investigate how science teachers experience that further education in science didactics, influence their action competence, when teaching for sustainable development. The concept action competence is based on an abridged version of Pär Nygrens (2004) description of how to develop professional action competence. His understanding constitutes background for the theory and analytical tools used in the study. The concept reflects the actual teaching carried out to ensure learning. Professional action competence comprises of both a potential and a realised action competence (Nygren, 2004). Potential action competence entails the three dimensions: knowledge, skills and principles. These dimensions are also described in the Official Norwegian Report (NOU) 1991:4 outlining the potential of education in Norwegian society in the 1990s. Astrid Sinnes claims in her book “Utdanning for bærekraftig utvikling” that «To develop pupils action competence is possibly the ultimate goal of education, when it comes to teaching for sustainable development. The advancement of the teachers own action competence must reflect the pupils’ action competence. In order to research action competence in relation to sustainable development I investigate students, participating in the course at master’s level, called: “Biological diversity and Man”. Five informants have participated. All of them had prior work experience as teachers before entering the master’s program. The five participants represent all levels within the educational system, from primary school to university level. The study investigates how the teachers experience the influence of the course “Biological diversity and Man” on their potential action competence. Meaning their knowledge, skills and principles, in teaching for sustainable development. Secondly, it examines what influences their realised action competence. If developing pupil’s action competence is the ultimate goal for schools, the findings of my study might point the teacher- education institutions and further education programs in the right direction, ensuring that teacher students are given appropriate training and knowledge. This will enable them to develop action competence when teaching for sustainable education. Key-words: sustainable development, education for sustainable development (UBU), action competence, further education for teachers.
