T With the introduction of the curriculum Knowledge Promotion Reform in 2006, Norway got a competency-based curriculum. In relation to the Knowledge Promotion Reform, individual assessments are part of regulations connected to the Education act. Since 2009, formative assessment has been a part of the Education Act. With this master study, I would like to investigate how formative assessment is implemented in the upper secondary school in the subject natural science. It is a qualitative study, in which four informants who teach science in the Education Programme for Specialization in General Studies are interviewed. The study is phenomenological and the method used is semi-structured interview. The findings in this study suggest that the curriculum’s competence aims steer much of the formative assessment practice in school, whereas the breakdown of the competence aims into more detailed learning objectives, is only used in a smaller measure. Furthermore, most of the formative assessment practice is not planned beforehand; Instead, it happens spontaneously during the lessons as the teachers make use of the questions or the feedback from the pupils to gain insight on the students’ knowledge and subsequently give appropriate feedback to move the students forward. Further, it varies among the informants how assessment criteria are used. One of four informants use assessment criteria in all type of activities during the school year. The other three informants only use assessment criteria mainly when they work with larger tasks and projects. When it comes to support the pupils in writing a science report, from either experiments or fieldwork, the informants use to give the pupils a template, but the template does not come with assessment criteria. The informants state that formative assessment is a comprehensive theme with varied methods. At the same time, they express that it is difficult to give a good quality formative assessment to the pupils; they feel unsure how to implement and document in the best possible way for the pupils. Two of the informants feel that they need more knowledge and awareness about formative assessment. The informants in my study implemented self-assessment, but they seldom use peer-assessment. Finally the informants emphasize that their assessment has a more holistic approach today than before the formative assessment was introduced. Earlier they focused on correct and wrong answers. Today their assessment focus is on the pupils’ understanding and individual feedback.
