In this study, I have investigated early calculation strategies within multiplication in a third grade class. I was the first teacher to have this theme with these students. The way students were introduced to multiplication was through an open task. That is, a task that provides opportunities to be solved in several ways. Nowhere in the task text that was presented to the students was the word multiplication used, this was a conscious decision since the goal is to let them explore and discover the concept of multiplication on their own. It's about creating understanding. As a problem, I have chosen "How do the use of different early calculation strategies in multiplication affect students in 3 grades possibilities to solve multiplication tasks of different levels?" What I have figured out is that, the time spent on a task and following errors through notation, or the lack of notation, are the biggest factors when it comes to opportunities to solve more difficult tasks in multiplication.
