In this bachelor's thesis, I have done a in depth study to see how the music subject can contribute to influencing pupil’s identity building and where the subject fits in the public-school system, and how this actually works in practice. To find out, I have compared theories of identity and interviewed two 4th grade teachers. What I found was, to a large extent, similar to my own experiences from when I was the age of the pupils. Namely that music plays a major role in their lives. The teachers clearly saw that music was part of both the pupil’s identity and pride. Although music, was a subject that had to fight a bit for its place in the school system. Even so the subject had its own place, especially when it came to interdisciplinary work.
