This assignment gives an attempt to answer the following thesis: Which general principles, tasks and activities are central in teaching of poetry according to recent literary theory? Literary theory is the basic ideas of literary practice, in terms of criticism, reading and interpretation (Skei, 2019). Literary theory has traditionally claimed that it is the information within a literary work that determines what message the work conveys, however, recent literary theorists argue that it is the reader who is the decisive element in the interpretation. I give an overview of three central theories; the Role of the Reader, Reception theory and Reader Response theory. The theoretical foundation of the assignment is discussed along with observations of a teaching program in a poetry course, in which I debate how recent literary theory can and should affect teaching of poetry. The thesis is written on the grounds of a qualitative research method, where the findings of significance center around the fluctuating degree the tasks and activities are a result of principles of recent literary theory.
