In this study, I analyze the coherence in excerpts from two textbooks used in subject of Norwegian for upper secondary school, called Moment vg3 and Grip Teksten vg3. I analyze the degree of coherence in the two excerpts using two textlinguistic theories. The two theories used are the theory of macrostructures, developed by Teun A. van Dijk, and the theory of pipelines, developed by Ib Ulbæk. By using these two theories, I explore a new theoretical approach to textbooks. The two theories have not been used together to analyse this type of text before, other than in my own former pilot project. Through using the two theories, I reveal different sides of the coherence in the two excerpts, both within the paragraphs of the excerpts and between the paragraphs. Both theories are developed to be used for analyzing text, but some independent methodological choices have been made. Several findings from the analysis are discussed, for example the length of paragraphs and amount of information in paragraphs, coherence between consecutive paragraphs, and explicit and implicit coherence between paragraphs. The findings from the analysis are used to assess the coherence in the two excerpts, based on the different degrees of coherence presented by Ulbæk (2005). I find that both of the excerpts are coherent, but to different degrees. One of the excerpts is assessed as strongly coherent, whilst the other is assessed as coherent. In the final chapter, I discuss the importance of good and clear structure in textbooks in the subject of Norwegian.
