I tillegg til å studere Whartons bakgrunn og motiv, vil jeg fokusere avhandlingen min rundt tre følgende romaner: Ethan Frome, The Custom of the Country og The Age of Innocence.
For my bachelor thesis, my intention is to explore the life of Edith Wharton and the women in her literary work. I find it interesting how she portrays not only the women themselves, but also their intentions, thoughts and ideas. Through this thesis I will study their desires, their needs and what may hinder them from gaining the life they envisioned themselves aspiring. It will also be of fundamental importance to discuss the life of Wharton herself, and what might have caused her to develop such a concern with the female intellect. Additionally to studying Wharton’s background and beliefs, I will focus my thesis around the three following novels: Ethan Frome, The Custom of the Country and The Age of Innocence. The aim is to discover if they express and contain elements that are essential in understanding Wharton’s motives as a writer. Furthermore, I will draw a comparison between the novels to examine whether they share similarities and if they offer any resolution to my thesis statement.
