Meeting the Standard

Abstract

I dag er ikke forventininger om at kvinner skal være en god husmor like høy. Kvinner er friere til å gjøre slik de vil og det er ikke like mange forventinger til dem når det kommer til å være en god kone og å ha en familie. Selv om det finnes andre former for press nå har kvinner mer å si når det kommer til å bestemme idealene for livet sitt. På den andre siden så var det kvinner tidligere som nettopp gjorde dette allerede da. Lucia Berlin (1936-2004) er en forfatter son har skrevet mange noveller rundt dette temaet på 1950-tallet til 1960-tallet. I denne teksten vil jeg se på ideen av femininitet i novellene "El Tim", "Unmanageable" og "Dear Conchi". Jeg vil se på hvordan de sammeligner med forventiningene til kvinner i kontekst med tiden Berlin var en ung dame, med et fokus på konseptet av husmor, ekteskap og sexualitet.

Today the expectation of women being the perfect housewife is no longer a pressure. Women are free to do what they like and there are not as many expectations of them when it comes to being a wife and having a family. Although there are other pressures now, women have more choices as to what their idea of a perfect life is. There were on the other hand women during this time, with expectations of being the perfect wife, that would push the idea of marriage being the final goal. Lucia Berlin (1936-2004) is an author that wrote many short stories about the life of women around this time in the 1950’s-60’s. The focus of this text will be on the idea of femininity in the short stories “El Tim”, “Unmanageable”, and “Dear Conchi”. I will be looking at how they compare to what was expected of women in context with the time in which Berlin was a young woman, with a focus on the concept of housewives, marriage and sexuality.
