This thesis takes the reader through the process of making an idea into a prototype. An out-of-office notification system, aimed to help office workers notify coworkers about their absence, is implemented with custom-made hardware and specialised software. The hardware consists of 100BASE-TX Ethernet, PoE, microSD, WQVGA capacitive touch display, and parallel flash and SRAM. A 16-bit microcontroller with integrated graphics controller and GPUs is used for driving the display, and a 32-bit microcontroller with RMII support drives Ethernet. An embedded HTTP server is adapted to work with FAT32 using a microSD card, together with 2048-bit SSL. The results reveal a throughput of 550 kB/s without and 317 kB/s with SSL, and there are suggestions for improvement.nb_NO
