In this work, a verification and extension of a linear rotary converter model is done in Matlab®/Simulink. The existing model was developed by Thomas Høyvik Garten in his master thesis “Linear Model of Rotary Converter in Traction Power System - Modeling and Simulations” (NTNU, June 2006). There was a need for improvement as well as for the 3-phase motor and 1-phase generator to reflect the typical low frequency of power oscillations better which have been observed in the Norwegian electric traction power supply system. The already existing 1-phase generator model of the rotary converter is remodelled for a stand-alone operation single load case and an electrical interface is implemented to the traction power system and the rail vehicle. The main components of the traction power system are added to the model. Simulations are done with a simple linear load model but the implemented interface is developed to connect a more detailed linear load model. The Simulation results, received from the model developed in Matlab® / SIMULINK in this work, are compared to simulation results from an already existing rotary converter model developed by SINTEF Energy Research in the power system simulation software Simpow® . It is found that the Matlab® / SIMULINK model developed in this work is able to reflect typical characteristics of the already existing Simpow® model simulation results. An analytical approach is taken and simplifications and limitations in the linear Matlab® / SIMULINK model developed in this work are explained.nb_NO
