| dc.description.abstract | In 2004 the UN raised concern about the widespread use of institutional care for children in Indonesia. In response the Indonesian government drafted “The National Standards of Care for Child Welfare Institutions”. So far little research is available on its implementation. The aim of this study was to explore caregiver perspectives on quality care for children living in childcare institutions in Indonesia. Information was collected using contextualized semistructured interviews of 14 caregivers working in five childcare institutions in Yogyakarta. Data was analysed with thematic analysis and constant comparative method. Cultural psychology, Attachment theory, and Nursing theories of Caring were used to explore and discuss the data. Results indicate that the caregivers have a relational model of ideal care consisting of three themes: Love, Sensitivity and Practice. Of these, love was considered the core component of quality care. The findings suggest that although the caregiver’s ideals largely comply with the national standards, the implementation of their ideals might be limited by challenging realities. The results of this study also shed light on possible implications of academic research on child-caregiver relationships and professional care in the West moving away from the concept of love. | nb_NO |
