In this chapter, we present the book’s contribution to the sociology of prisons and identify four themes the analysis addresses. First, many of the chapters highlight the significance of different forms of social inequality in prison and show how some groups of prisoners have different – and tougher – experiences of incarceration than do others. Second, the chapters shed light on how the prison is inseparable from the modern welfare state, especially through the emergence of «exceptional» prisons and new forms of punishment. A third theme is everyday life in penal institutions, where the authors analyse how prisoners experience stigmatization, infringement and institutionalization. A final theme is the prison as an arena for the exercise of many forms of power. In addition, this introduction gives an overview of the chapters of the book, their theoretical and methodological approaches, and presents the book’s starting point as a collective learning project.
