Å være mor - En utstillingssamtale på kunstmuseet om moderskap

Abstract

Masteroppgaven belyser hvordan kunsterfaring og kunstsamtale kan bidra til voksne menneskers gjenkjennelse, erkjennelse og identitet. I samarbeid med Trondheim kunstmuseum ble en barselgruppe invitert til utstillingssamtale på kunstmuseet om moderskap. Med utgangspunkt i problemstillingen Hvordan kan kunstformidleren i kunstmuseet legge til rette for en kunsterfaring som undersøker og beskriver moderskapsidentitet undersøker jeg hvordan dialogbasert formidling kan medvirke til å utforske og beskrive moderskapsidentitet, og hvordan kunstmuseet kan være arena for samtale og identitet. Oppgavens teorikapittel har to deler. Første del består av teori om moderskap. Med utgangspunkt i ulike sjangrer undersøker jeg hva moderskap er og innebærer for kvinner. Teorikapitlets andre del har et teoretisk perspektiv på kunstformidling og kunsterfaring. Fokus er på kunstmuseets- og kunstformidlerens møte med kunstbetrakteren. Metodene jeg har brukt er kvalitative og bygger på en hermeneutisk tilnærming og et konstruktivistisk inspirert forskningsperspektiv. En ikonografisk bildeanalyse av kunstverkene som ble brukt i utstillingssamtalen har vært en viktig del av kasusstudien og utgangspunkt for datamaterialet som ble samlet inn gjennom utstillingssamtale, fokusgruppeintervju og observasjon. Utstillingssamtalen bidro til å beskrive og bearbeide det usigelig i moderskapet, og moderskapsidentiteter som var mer eller mindre identiske med barselgruppas moderskapsidentiteter ble synlige: Det ambivalente moderskapet og det prestisjefylte moderskapet. I mødrenes moderskapserfaringer ble et nytt moderskap synlig: Et postmoderne hybrid-moderskap som forener egenskaper fra det tradisjonelle moderskapet med det moderne moderskapet. Å være hybrid-mamma innebærer å være oppofrende og tradisjonell husmor og selvstendig og selvopptatt karrierekvinne på en og samme tid. Det fremkom at media og sosiale medier, som foreksempel instagram, bidrar til å konstruere og definere hva moderskap er og skal være, og påvirker både mødrene selv og omgivelsenes forventninger til mødrene.

The master thesis illustrates how art experience and exhibition talk can contribute to recognition and identity of adults. In collaboration with Trondheim Art Museum, a maternity group was invited to an exhibition talk about motherhood. Based on the isssue, How can the art educator in the art museum facilitate an art experience that examines and describes motherhood identity I have examined how dialouge-based teaching can help to explore and describe motherhood identity and how the art museum can be an arena for dialogue and identity. The theory chapter has two parts. The first part consists of theory of motherhood. Based on different genres I have examined what motherhood means for women. The second part of the theory chapter has a theoretical perspective on art teaching and art experience. The focus is on the art museum and the art educators meeting with the art audience. The methods I have used are qualitative and based on a hemeneutic approach and a constructivist-inspired resarch perspective. An iconographic image analysis of the art works used in the exhibition talk was an important part of the case study and the starting point for the data collected through exhibition talk, focus group interview and observation. The exhibition talk helped to describe and process the unseen in motherhood. Motherhood identities that were more or less similar to motherhood identities of the maternity group became visible: The ambivalent motherhood and the prestigious motherhood. In the mothers motherhood experiences a new motherhood became visible: A postmodern hybrid motherhood that unites characteristics from the traditional motherhood with modern motherhood. Being a hybrid mother means being a sacrificial and traditional housewife and independent career woman at one and the same time. The mothers experience that media and social media such as instagram construct and define motherhood identity. It affects both the mothers and the society`s expectations for the mothers.
