Metacognitive therapy is founded on the model of self-regulation of executive functions and metabeliefs in psychological disorders. The model proposes that metacognitive beliefs about thoughts, feelings and strategies create a cognitive attentional syndrome consisting of worry/rumination, threat monitoring, and unhelpful strategies which causes distress. This article is to the author's knowledge the first to review the updated empirical evidence of the metacognitive model and treatment. Today there is extensive evidence for the cognitive attentional syndrome and metacognitions in a variety of psychological disorders. MCT has become a recommended treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, and has shown promising results in other psychological disorders.nb_NO
