Perceived stress, sense of coherence and musculosketal pain - Exploring the relationships and gender differences

Previous researches have indicated a relationship between stress, musculoskeletal pain and sense of coherence and gender differences in the variables. Possible implications have also been found, such as economic problems, and health issues. The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between stress, sense of coherence and musculoskeletal pain in addition to gender differences in Norwegian adolescents. 127 Norwegian senior high school students completed a questionnaire on stress, sense of coherence and musculoskeletal pain. A correlation analysis, descriptive analysis and a Person Chi-Square analysis was conducted. The results found show a high association between sense of coherence and stress variables. Most of the pain variables were found to be associated with sense of coherence. A correlation between most pain variables (Intensity and sites) and almost all stress variables (Total stress, worries, tension, and demands) was found. Gender differences was found in having pain or not, and arm pain were females reported higher levels. Females also reported higher stress levels inn almost all stress variable, only excluding joy. Sense of coherence showed a higher level in males, compared to females. Sense of coherence is therefore argued to have a stronger relationship with mental health (stress) than physical health (musculoskeletal pain), Females struggle more with stress and pain, and can possibly be explained by the correlations between stress and musculoskeletal pain. Males showed higher levels of sense of coherence, and could possibly explain the gender difference found in pain and stress.
