Communication is vital in all human interaction and has been implicated as a contributing cause in a large number of severe accidents in different industries. The aim of this thesis was to increase the knowledge of how the fishing industry and the aviation industry communicates safety policy and procedures to their employees, furthermore how the employees in the respective organizations understand the safety procedures. This thesis is based on nine semi-structured interviews with informants ranging from managers, pilots, captains and a technician. Thematic analysis has been used as a basis for the analysis. The thesis identifies several communication practices in how the management communicates safety policy and procedures to their employees. There are identified several findings in how the employees understand the safety procedures from the management. In the implications of the thesis there are offered suggestions to improving the communication practices, which could influence how the employees understand the safety procedures. The major findings from the fishing industry are that the management communicates safety policy and procedures through Safety manuals, Key informants, Interaction and Reporting system. There is presented a discussion on whether the communication practices are effective, in making the employees' understand the safety procedures, or not. The major findings from the employees understanding of the safety procedures were that not all of the informants stayed updated on all the safety procedures, seemingly due to the quality and the number of safety procedures. Also, the employees deliberately do not report certain deviations, seemingly due to the fear of generating more safety procedures. The major findings from the aviation industry are that the management communicates safety policy and procedures through formal information channels, Interaction and Reporting system. The thesis offers a discussion on whether the communication practices are effective, in making the employees understand the safety procedures, or not. The major findings from the employees understanding of the safety procedures were that the informants were uncertain of having the correct understanding of the safety procedures as intended from the management. Furthermore, the employees had the understanding that particular deviation reports would not lead to changes and that the reporting system was too comprehensive.nb_NO
