This study investigates how the use of media contributes to a change of communication in the doctor-patient-relationship. During the study process of this master’s thesis, empirical data has been gathered by using the method of qualitative depth interview. The concept of mediatization is used as a key perspective to enlighten the theme of the thesis. The analysis is focusing both on how patients use the Internet as an arena to gather information about health, and how interactive media, like self-tracking technologies, are used to generate data of one’s own health. The study will show that mediatization and medicalization has an impact on the social practices within the doctor-patient-relation. The participants in the study are all considered as patients, and the analysis show that they use media in different ways to extend the communication with their doctor. All the participants have used different kind of self-tracking technologies in relation to health. Most of them use it privately or as a social activity with friends and colleagues – and not to communicate with their doctor. But the study shows that the use of these technologies may indirectly have consequences for the doctor-patient-relation, as users become more aware of monitoring their own body, and to maintain good health.nb_NO
