Abstract
Summary of thesis
The thesis presents a methodological approach for flexible mapping and environmental monitoring that in each case are adjusted to purpose and the present ambient conditions, including anthropogenic activities and discharges. The different steps from the planning phase and data sampling, storage, processing and data interpretation are covered by the methodology described. Furthermore, the importance of data sampled with sufficient temporal and spatial resolution and coverage, and the need for methodological development and interdisciplinary collaboration to explore the inherent knowledge in environmental data is emphasised.
10 scientific publications are included in the thesis. The overall methodology is presented in two papers. Furthermore, two papers describe technology development/optimisation and knowledge based improvement through laboratory experiments, respectively. Various applications and methodology development for data interpretation are described in five of the publications. The last manuscript describes the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to be capable of utilising the inherent properties available in the data sampled. Furthermore, it is argued why and how images can be good collaborative tools (boundary object) in interdisciplinary communication and knowledge dissemination.
