| dc.description.abstract | This master thesis is concerned with school-merger and organisational culture among teachers. The case of study is two high schools that have merged into one. One high school focused on vocational studies and one on general studies. The main research question is the following: “How does a school-merger affect the organizational culture among teachers?” In today`s Norway mergers are popular political ways to increase effectivity and decrease financial costs. In the political decision-making process around a merger the focus on teachers and human factors are lacking, this study have a goal to bring the attention to the teacher and their everyday at work. This study uses a qualitative method. The study conducts seven indepth interviews of teacher’s from the two high schools. The data from the interviews are categorised, and analysed on the basis of the theoretical framework that is developed in the study.
The analysis finds that the two high schools have two distinct cultures, and that these cultures continues among the staff after the merger. The cultures are defined as the vocational studies culture and the general studies –culture. The vocational studies –culture is focused on the pupil and practical knowledge, while the general studies –culture is focused on theoretical knowledge and grades. When these two cultures start working under the same roof, the differences between them appear. They have different ways of working together, thought on discipline and grades and their goal for the pupil are different. The findings in this study can help decision-makers and school-leader to approach mergers in ways that focus on the important aspect of organisational culture. | nb_NO |
