A newly developed gps-corrected fuse for the NM28 artillery shell has been analysed in Abaqus /Explicit. FFI wanted more info on the dynamic behavior of the fuse, and if the integrity of the structure was retained during a firing sequence. The front part of the fuse is not to rotate, while the rear is. Because of this, a system of bearings is needed. These bearings cannot handle the axial load when the shell accelerates, so a disc spring assembly has been created . This feather assembly compresses, causing parts outside of the bearings to contact, sending the loads around the bearings. When the acceleration subsides, the disc springs push the parts to separate, so they can rotate freely relative to each other. A Solidworks model was provided to the candidate. The geometry was simplified in Solidworks, so all parts but one could be hex-meshed when imported into Abaqus, a necessity when doing an explicit analysis. Great care was taken during simplification not to remove elements of parts that would affect results. Ballistic data (Pressure, air resistance, rotation and yaw) and their onset and decay amplitudes were implemented. Material data was gathered, the parts were plasticity was expected got plastic data, the rest elastic. 316L stainless steel has a flow stress heavily dependent on strain-rate, so a strain-rate dependent model was included. Simulations showed that several parts of the fuse reached plasticity, and integrity was not retained. There are some small parts that are to stop the structure from separation, and stabilize sideways. These got plastic deformations, causing the structure to fail. The same occurred when tested by FFI. To maintain structural integrity, some fixes have been investigated. The spring stiffness has been examined, as has the material of the ears, the parts that are supposed to stop the structure from disintegrating when the springs shoot them apart. A few solutions to this problem has been proposed. During the course of the thesis, more problems with the fuse has been found. The bearings are severely overloaded, and will, undoubtedly, fail. A disc spring is not to be used at more than 75% of max compression, due to the dangers of them inverting. Due to inertia effects from the mass of the discs themselves, the lower discs ( carrying the weight of the other discs) were found to compress to the point where they are almost flat. A new disc spring assembly and minor modifications of a part is suggested.nb_NO
