Intercom stations certainly do not belong in the past. The concept is still very much alive and proves a vitaltool where communication is critical; aboard ships, in airports, correctional facilities and many more. Apartfrom being a device used to call the next door office, Zenitel’s intercom stations can be used to open doorsand gates, give messages over public address, receivecalls from emergency points, and more. STENTOFON is one of the Zenitel brands, well knownin the business of critical communications, providing solutions mainly aimed at the on-shore market. However, increased access to reasonable touch based technology has caused Zenitel to look towards overhauling the STENTOFON product portfolio, focusing on their three flagships: The IP Desktop Master and IP Dual Display for desktops, and thewall-/console mounted IP Flush Master. Today Zenitel need to manufacture and stock components for these three, physically different intercom stations, which essentially have the sameuses, apart from the mounting options and minor features. By introducing a new flexible intercom concept, consisting of a single desktop station and a singlewall-/console station with interchangeable parts, Zenitel would not need to manufacture and stock so many different components. Using touch screen technology not only creates amore flexible intercom concept, but opens up for introducing a whole new interface which has the potential of outperforming the current products onboth flexibility, usability and user friendliness. The core aspects and requirements for the concept development process have been: ergonomics, aesthetics, flexibility and methods of manufacture. In order to evaluate the concepts developed throughout the project, ergonomic studies were executed, along with opinion polls on the different designs. Zenitel has been consulted in order to attain information about the aspects like manufacture and production cost. The new touch screen intercom concept is designed to fit the market in which STENTOFON operates, providing a complementary pair of flexible products which are fully able to replace, as well as outperform, the current intercom stations, both for desktops and walls/consoles. The new concept design is based on available, affordable technology and could, in theory, be massproduced today. The design expresses professionalism and reliability, supporting the values upheld by the STENTOFON brand. The design should fit the very most office landscapes and control rooms.nb_NO
