dc.description.abstractThere have been few changes in the distribution of IT work in the last couple of years, but over the past 20 years, the time spent on maintenance has increased. The changes have been studied through several investigation. In this master thesis, we present the results from the "IT i praksis" survey performed in 2015. This survey has 227 responders from Norwegian organizations. We use previous investigations to compare the results with and examine in which direction the development is moving. In addition to the quantitative study, case studies have been performed in this research to get some qualitative data and gain more insight into reasons behind decisions. We want to learn more about what challenges organizations have and what factors that are important for an IT development to be efficient. An efficient IT department should develop IT systems that support the business and be able to develop new functionality needed by the business. The objective of this master thesis is to give better knowledge in the area of study. In addition the aim to be more aware of which factors influence the distribution of IT work . The results from this survey and previous investigations show that it is a trend that maintenance is taking up more time of an organization s IT work. The share of maintenance in 1993 investigation was 59.0% and in 2003 it was 65,9%. In this year s survey, it is 71.7%. The results also show an increase in application portfolio upkeep over the last twenty year. In 1993 it was 44%, and in 2003 it was 63%. In the 2015 "IT i praksis" survey it is 67%,
