Summary of the thesis: The thesis is an empirical study of the use of digital games in Norwegian schools, from a science and technology (STS) point of view. The topic is examined at three different arenas: news media, teachers learning to use digital games, and pupils using digital games for learning. Digital game based learning (DGBL) is a research field under fast development and will likely leave its mark on Norwegian schools in the coming years. The three core papers cover three different aspects of the actual situation. In the first paper, the context is studied with regard to the public discourse surrounding digital games for learning, through an analysis of Norwegian newspaper texts. The newspapers address digital games in contrasting ways. On one hand digital games are presented as a threat, something to be feared, a bad displacement, potentially addictive, that may induce violence and even massacres. Young men and boys are thought to be particularly at risk. This narrative is prominent when digital games are presented as a leisure activity. However, a positive frame is also observed, emphasizing the learning components and potential of digital games, enjoyment as a quality and motivating factor and other positive traits that are thought to stimulate and facilitate learning. This narrative is more visible when digital games are presented in relation to education, placing digital games for learning in an ambiguous cultural context. In the second paper, the focus is on teachers and their potential role in in shaping DGBL. How do they think about digital games in their teaching? The dataset consists of reflection notes that a group of teachers and teacher students produced at the end of a course about how to employ DGBL in teaching. It asks about the presence of shared sociotechnical imaginaries in the teachers’ reflection notes, or if these notes just represented a diversity of ideas. It also analyzes what kind of practices are articulated in the reflection notes. The third paper turns the spotlight towards pupils. How do Norwegian pupils experience the domestication of DGBL? 16 focus group interviews are analyzed to study digital game-based learning (DGBL) experiences and involvement of 64 pupils in four Norwegian primary and upper secondary schools. The paper draws on domestication theory and actor-network theory. Actor-network theory is used to explore the assemblages constructed in relation to the games used for teaching. Domestication is studied in a setting where pupils undergo what may be seen as a collective domestication process, although under direct influence of the teachers’ views, educational philosophy and gaming preferences. Domestication theory proved useful in this context. Furthermore the domestication process was assessed as predominantly positive by the pupils. Due to the connection to digital games for entertainment, DGBL is seen as more controversial than many other teaching approaches. It is an example of complex actor networks and assemblages and only standardized to a limited degree. The thesis illuminates the practice of DGBL in Norway today. It shows how media influences the acceptance and implementation of DGBL, how teachers view and deal with the challenges as well as opportunities that lie within DGBL and how pupils experience DGBL in the classroom. The introductory overview essay provides a more extensive discussion of theoretical and methodological issues, in addition to a cross-cutting analysis of the three papers. This analysis highlights several different theorietical aspects of DGBL. The controversial nature of DGBL is one, leading to a discussion about the actor-network process of translation, explaining relevance and achievements. Two contrasting assemblages are also presented, the positive and the negative assemblage. Finally, the cross-cutting analysis adresses the absence of standardization within DGBL in the light of co-production of knowledge.nb_NO
