Summary of the thesis: The present thesis is a discourse study of police interviews of adult witnesses in investigations concerning violence and sexual abuse. Through detailed analysis of audio recordings of eleven interviews, I describe and explain what characterizes these interviews as conversations. The study is done within the framework of the academic discipline of applied linguistics, and a central goal is therefore to contribute with knowledge of relevance for police investigator's training. The main data is audio recordings and transcriptions of police interviews, supplemented by observation of the training of police interviewers and document studies of institutional and professional conditions for the interview. The analysis demonstrates how the interaction between the interviewee and the interviewer progresses in three different parts of the interview: the presentation of rights and obligations of the interviewee in the opening phase; sequences where the interviewer seeks to prompt the interviewee to expand on details in the testimony; and sequences where the interviewee provides accounts for why she did not do more physical resistance during the abuse. A main finding is that the participants both enables and constrains each other's contributions, and that the interviewee's testimony therefore needs to be understood as a result of the interaction between the interviewer and the interviewee. The title «Balancing acts» relates to another main finding: The police interview is a conversation where the participants must balance different considerations in the situation, such as the institutional requirements of a police interview, the interviewee's need to be seen as trustworthy, and the interviewer's professional knowledge of what creates a good interview. Attentiveness to these crossing considerations in the interview is important to understand the complex role of the police interviewer. In the finishing chapter, I therefore discuss how discourse analysis of police interviews could be of relevance to training and education of interviewers.nb_NO
