This thesis is a study of the importance of nature protection and the introduction of a local management model in Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park. The theoretical framework is largely based on theories and concept in the field of natural resource management. The empirical basis is mainly interviews with traditional stakeholders (farmers, actors within reindeer herding, a landowner with the largest outfield property in the area), mayors and the national park manager. As a supplement to this I conducted a focus group interview with the Nationalpark Board. The study is structured around three research questions: the first asks what impact have protected areas had for the traditional use in the area and the municipalities of Snåsa and Lierne, the second asks about the significance of local management for local value adding and business development, and third question looks at cooperation between different actors and to what extent they have managed to develop collaborative solutions. The main findings show that much has happened since local management was introduced ten years ago. The protection status created discord between the various stakeholders and several rounds of discussion about the protection in itself and the management of the national park.. The Reindeer industry chose not to participate in the early phase of management of the national park. Today the situation is different. The local management of Blåfjella- Skjækerfjella National Park has been reorganized from the point when this park entered a pilot program for alternative management models and in todays’ management cooperative relations seems to be present to a greater extent. So far the national par status does not seem to have altered the qualities in the area in a negative or positive sense. This applies to both industries studies (farming and reindeer herding) and for the municipalities as such. There is disagreement as to whether a national park increase the status of the area or if mountain areas like thishave a value independent of the brand national park. There is a consensus among the interviewees that the areas in the national park have qualities because they have been used as an asset for the primary industries over a long time period and and that it is essential to maintain these qualities in the future.nb_NO
