Kommunikasjon i et flerkulturelt miljø, finnes det et ”språk” som fremmer inkludering?

Abstract

NORSK: Denne masteroppgave omhandler temaet interkulturell kommunikasjon og hvordan den virker inn i helsearbeideres hverdag. Teoretisk ståsted i oppgaven vil være Professor Øivind Dahls kulturfiltermodell og respondenter er ansatte ved 3 helsestasjoner i samme fylke. Oppgaven bygges opp som en kvalitativ studie med bruk av semistrukturerte gruppeintervjuer som verktøy og bruk av hermeneutikk som vitenskapsteoretisk ståsted. Oppgaven har fokus på elementer som hemmer og fremmer kommunikasjon i et flerkulturelt miljø. Funnene som er gjort sees som utfordringer knyttet til organisering av kommunens helseforebyggende tjenester og graden av egen påvirkning i kommunikasjonen der forforståelse og etnosentrisme faller inn. Fokus på kompetanseheving vil være et viktig element i oppgaven. Avslutningsvis er det et kapitel der jeg skisserer en mulig vei videre som kan gi helsearbeideren en større innsikt i det flerkulturelle arbeid og hvilke elementer i kommunikasjon de bør vektlegge. Drøftning og analyse bygger på Dahls kulturfiltermodel og målet for oppgaven er et større fokus på inkludering i kommunikasjonen.

ENGELSK: This thesis deals with intercultural communication and how it effects the health worker’s every day. The theoretical standpoint will be professor Øivind Dahl’s culture filter model and those parcipitating are employees from 3 health stations in a concurrent county. The study is built up qualitively using semi structured group interviews’ as a tool, and the use of hermeneuretic as a scientific theoretical standpoint. The study focuses on elements that both hamper and encourage communication in a multicultural environment. Results found are looked upon as challenges to the organisation of the commune’s preventive health service and the grade of one’s own influence in communicating where preunderstanding and etnosentrisme are concerned. Focus on heightening competence will be an important element in the study. Finally, a chapter where I promote a possible solution that can give health workers a greater insight into multicultural work and which elements they should accentuate. Discussion and analysis builds on Dahl’s culture filter model and the goal for the study is a greater focus on inclusion in communication.
