H: Introduction: In 2010, 28271 new cases of cancer were registered in Norway. The development and improvement of treatment causes more people to live longer with cancer. This leads to an increased need for more nurses in the community. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to find out what nurses in homecare can do to help with pain relief in the palliative phase of the cancer patients. Method: This paper is a literature study. Literature searches were done using the databases: Cinahl, Academic search elite and Cochrane, in the time frame January to early April 2013. Search words like cancer, palliative care, home nursing and pain assessment were applied. Results: NSAIDs, Paracetamol and opioids are the most used medications in pain management of cancer patients. Non-drug measures as music, massage and heat/cold therapy is also often used. Conclusion: The nurse’s job in the palliative phase is to relief symptoms and pain, providing information and care, and terminal care. A combination of pharmacological pain relief and non-drug pain relief seems to be a good solution.no_NO
