K: Background: With cancer disease the need for energy and proteins increase. At the same time, weight loss and malnutrition are reported as the most common secondary diagnosis together with cancer. Nutrition is both a fundamental need and a prerequisite for a good therapeutic result. Despite this, a lack of knowledge and interest with health care professionals exists. Purpose: The purpose of this literature search is to focus on the knowledge nurses need to contribute to maintain nutritional status for cancer patients during cytostatic treatment. Method: Literature searches were done using the databases: Academic Search Elite, Cinal, Ovid Nursing Database and ”Sykepleien fag – og forskningsarkiv”, in the time frame January to medio March 2012. Search words like cancer, nutrition problemes/supplements, chemotherapy and nausea were applied. Discussion: Several measures can be initiated to maintain nutritional status. This study particularly highlights the importance of reducing cytostatic – induced side effects and increasing the competence of health care professionals.no_NO
