This thesis explores the risk and protective factor underlying the development of substance abuse among adolescents. Substance abuse is a growing trend among youth, making the topic highly relevant to child welfare work. Understanding risk and protective factors is crucial for comprehending, preventing, and providing tailored support. The method employed in this study is literature review. Relevant literature, theory, and research in the field were gathered through structured searches in databases such as “Oria”, “Idunn”, and “Google Scholar”. The research question is discussed in light of existing research in the field, as well as Bronfenbrenner´s ecological theory. Findings, theory, and discussion highlight how factors such as the adolescent themselves, family, and environment can function as both risk and protective factors concerning substance abuse in youth. Through Bronfenbrenner´s ecological theory, we gain insight into how the systems surrounding youth influence each other positively and negatively.
