Analysis of the Wave Equation on the Disk
Abstract
Musical analogy has been responsible for lots of general math concepts, such asthe wave equation and spectral decomposition. In this bachelor thesis I focuson how the theory of unbounded operators help understand the wave equationon a circular membrane. Also vice versa, the modeling of sound from a drumhead is used as an introductory step into the theory of unbounded operators. The vibrations of a string is something we all have studied. Calculus (includingdifferential equations) and concepts of eigenvalues and eigenvectors in finitedimensional linear algebra is well understood.Concepts in Lebesgue integration theory is introduced in the preliminaries buta complete understanding requires a background outside of this thesis. Hilbertspace notation is also covered.
