Abstract
This bachelor`s thesis examines how editing can contribute to reflecting the emotions of characters in a movie. Through an analysis of the film Phantom Thread (Anderson 2017), I have tried to find out to what extent editing can contribute to how we interpret the emotions of the characters that we follow. I have used cognitive film theory and the book “Passionate Views: Film, Cognition and Emotion” to link editing to emotions and emotional responses. I mainly focused on the texts about timing, music, face and empathy, and I conducted an analysis using these theories to examine the effect editing has on emotions. What I found was that editing, and the use of music can greatly affect how we understand characters in movies.
