ABSTRACT

Background: Each year approximately 10,000 patients admitted to Norwegian emergency departments with sepsis. Older people is a group that we know are vulnerable to sepsis. The proportion of elderly people in society is expected to increase in the future. This suggests that sepsis among patients in home care will increase as well.
Purpose: Based on this, we wanted to find the most important factors for early identification of sepsis in elderly patients in home care.
Method: A systematic literature study based on research articles, curriculum literature and specialist books.
Result: The research articles we have used in the thesis emphasize three main aspects: the time aspect, competence of healthcare personnel and effective scoring tools.
Conclusion: We conclude that the time aspect is one of several decisive factors for the early identification of sepsis in elderly patients in home care. NEWS2 is highlighted as the most reliable scoring tool. The importance of clinical competence and knowledge of healthcare personnel is also highlighted as important factors to ensure early identification of sepsis in elderly patients in home care. We emphasize the importance of more research on this topic.
