Abstract
This article examines the phenomenon of rewatching. The investigation includes a close-analysis of the character Rachel from the TV-series Friends, and a discussion of how character engagement can influence the desire to rewatch. The approach used for the investigation is cognitive film theory, with insights into cognitive film theorists like Murray Smith and his sympathy structure. Iris Vidmar Jovanović believes that Smith´s sympathy structure and empathy theory are not sufficient to explain the long-term character engagement viewers have for TV-series with many seasons. The research question in this article is: How can character engagement influence rewatching TV-series? One finding from the investigation is the emphasis on the viewers´ friendship with the characters, affecting their engagement with the character. This is something that influences the choice to rewatch TV-series. Rewatching thus eliminates the characters´ absence and the requirement to say goodbye to them.
