Phosphorus is essential for production of fertilizers for use in agriculture and is thus closely connected to the food security of the world. Open cage aquaculture production of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is a contributor to human-induced eutrophication in Norwegian coastal waters, and the phosphorus emitted here can to some extent be recycled by producing macroalgae in proximity to the cages, in an integrated multi trophic aquaculture system (IMTA). This can reduce waste of a finite resource as well as reduce eutrophication in adjacent ecosystems. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the potential for uptake and recirculation of phosphorus by the red algae Palmaria palmata in a IMTA setting.
This was done by conducting a nutrient uptake experiment where biomass was exposed to a gradient of phosphorus, to find any effect on phosphorus uptake rates and tissue content. The results did not indicate a concrete threshold for uptake of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) along the set gradient. For the four lowest concentrations (0.25, 0.5, 1.0 & 2.0 μM P) a significant difference in reduction of DIP was found between the initial sample and 180 minutes. A correlation between uptake rate and initial concentration was found from 0-50 minutes, and later. Conclusively, this experiment did not necessarily uncover significant findings about the phosphorus recycling capabilities of P. palmata, but other scientific research does reveal advantageous properties of the species for IMTA cultivation.
