Abstract
The thesis represents a comprehensive examination of the performance characteristics of three different types of riser configurations: Steel catenary Riser (SCR), Weigh-Distributed Riser (WDR), and Steel Lazy Wave Riser (SLWR)The static analysis aimed to unveil the different characteristics between the SCR, WDR, and SLWR configurations, particularly in relation to the static configuration, tension, and bending. Each of these configurations will bring its own advantages and weaknesses, thereby enhancing the understanding of the robustness of the systems.
Building upon the static analysis, a dynamic analysis was performed to investigate the differences between the configurations further. The results gained from the dynamic analysis were the force envelope curve, the moment envelope curve, and the displacement envelope curve. The SCR would experience the highest amount of dynamic bending, indicating high amounts of stress during the operation. The SLWR would demonstrate a pattern with three distinct peaks in the dynamic bending, suggesting that the wave configuration would better distribute the dynamic bending along the length of the riser.
The force envelope curve will provide the dynamic tension for each of the configurations. For both the SCR and the WDR, negative tension was experienced, indicating compression in the structure. However, the SLWR would mitigate the compression by minimizing the vertical movement experienced in the touchdown region.
All the risers will be tested in the report will consider a water depth of 1000 meters, where the riser will be subjected to extreme weather conditions, the computer program SIMA/RIFLEx has been utilized for the static and dynamic analysis
