Abstract
Begge avsmuttingsløsningene løser opp overflateanrikningen i lignende grad. Recycling aluminium is important in order to lower energy consumption and increase sustainability. However, recycled aluminium based on post-consumer scrap risks the addition of unwanted inclusions and impurities that can have a significant impact on the corrosion resistance of the alloy. Various methods of pretreatment are used to increase adhesion between an alloy surface and an overlaying coating, inhibiting the threat of filiform corrosion. In order to minimize the threat that increased impurities have on recycled aluminium alloys and their corrosion resistance, the pretreatment should be equally efficient for a variety of alloy compositions. The pretreatment process that has been studied consists of four steps; degreasing using organic solvent, alkaline etching in 2.5 mol/L sodium hydroxide, desmutting in acidic oxidizers and Zr-based conversion coating. In this thesis, the mechanisms during desmutting in two different desmutting solutions has been studied on AA6060 aluminium alloy samples containing increased amounts of copper and nickel. The two desmutting solutions were concentrated nitric acid and a solution of 0.2 mol/L ferric ions and 1.5 mol/L sulfuric acid. Electrochemical measurements conducted during desmutting were dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, open circuit potential and polarisation resistance. Surface characterisation of desmutted samples was done with Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectrometry and Transmission Electron Microscopy, and elemental concentrations of desmutting solutions were found by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Finally, a filiform corrosion test was conducted for comparison of corrosion resistance after pretreatment with the two different desmutting solutions. A suggested mechanism was proposed in which most dissolution on the surface happens within 135 s. Both desmutting solutions dissolve surface enrichment to a similar degree. The main difference between the solutions is the dissolution rate of iron, which is attributed to passivation in nitric acid. The filiform corrosion test revealed corrosion resistance of close to equal quality which indicates equal performances between the two desmutting solutions, but perhaps also a lack of significance of the desmutting step in the total pretreatment.
