Abstract
DEP-teorien. The purpose of this master thesis is to share experiences and encounters people with autism spectrum diagnosis (ASD) have regarding communication. The project is based on a conversation analysis of three interviews. Every interview consisted of a pair of participants aged 18-40 that know each other well, and where one of them has ASD and the other does not. The interviews make up the data material for two studies: 1) an analysis of the interview conversation that gives insight into how the informants with ASD communicates with someone that does not have ASD, and 2) an analysis of the stories shared by the informants that show how they experience their own communication. The thesis is more specifically concerned with what pragmatic phenomena people with ASD master or struggle within communication with others. The relevance theory (Wilson & Sperber, 1986/1995) is the basis of the theoretical perspective on communication in this thesis and is used to define the pragmatic phenomena that is studied; reference assignment, implicature, irony and metaphor. Further, the thesis discusses the reasons behind why people with ASD sometimes experience successful communication and other times not, considering two theories: theory of mind (ToM) (Premack & Woodruff, 1978) and the doble empathy problem (DEP) (Milton, 2012). The ToM-theory predicates in summary that people with ASD can experience communicative challenges because they lack the ability to mentalize. The DEP-theory predicates in turn that the failure in communication occurs because the interlocutors fail to facilitate the conversation well enough for each other, and that big differences occur in their attention and cognitive environment. Which of the two theories is best suited to explain the communicative abilities and experiences of the informants with ASD is discussed based on the results of the analysis.
The results show that communication between people with and without ASD works well in the instances where the interlocutors facilitate good communication. The informants with ASD show that they experience both challenges and successes when it comes to using and interpreting pragmatic phenomena that according to the ToM-theory demand the ability to mentalize. Since the informants largely show that they master use and interpretation of the pragmatic phenomena, the thesis asserts the notion that the failure in communication does not come from a lack of the ability to mentalize, but rather because of poor and unfacilitated communication, cf. the DEP-theory.
