Maktens Ringer: En biografisk analyse av smykker i depotene fra yngre bronesalder i Midt-Norge

Abstract

Gjennom hele bronsealderen deponeres gjenstander på utvalgte steder i landskapet. I Midt-Norge ble det fra midten av 1800-tallet og starten av 1900-tallet gjort funn av fem depoter fra yngre bronsealder. Funnene fra Gyl, Rennstein, Stavå, Gunnesøy og Brudal består utelukkende av bronsegjenstander. De ser ut til å være en del av et større skandinavisk fenomen mot slutten av bronsealderen, hvor store mengder halsringer og holkøkser deponeres sammen. Gjennom en undersøkelse av brukssporene på gjenstandene og kontekstene de er funnet i, prøver denne oppgaven å rekonstruere biografiene til gjenstandene i depotene for å belyse deponeringsskikken mot slutten av bronsealderen. Analysen viser at gjenstandene har hatt sentrale roller i samfunnene de levde i og at de tradisjonelle tolkningene av gjenstandene ikke alltid stemmer. Den viser og at det har vært en felles forståelse av hvordan depotene i perioden skulle se ut og i hvilke kontekster de skulle nedlegges i, men viser og at deponeringsskikken har vært fleksibel og at gjenstandenes biografier kan ha spilt en rolle i hvor og hvordan de skulle nedlegges.

Throughout the Bronze Age, objects were deposited in selected places in the landscape. From the middle of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, five such hoards from the Late Bronze Age were discovered at Stavå, Gunnesøy, Brudal, Gyl and Rennstein. The hoards contain prestigious bronze objects. The hoarding appears to be part of a larger Scandinavian phenomenon towards the end of the Bronze Age, where large quantities of neck rings and socketed axes are deposited together. Through a use-wear analysis of the objects and an analysis of the contexts in which they were found, this thesis attempts to reconstruct the in biographies of the objects to shed light on the deposition practice towards the end of the Bronze Age. The analysis shows that the objects had central roles in the societies in which they lived and that the traditional interpretations of the objects do not necessarily reflect their use. It has also shown that there has been a common Scandinavian understanding on how to assemble and deposit a hoard, but also that the artifact biographies have played a role in the deposition.
