Abstract
Nøkkelord: provosert abort, medisinsk abort, psykiske behov, sykepleie, abortomsorg Background: Throughout the three years of the nursing school, there is little to no focus on women’s health. Induced abortion is a heavily debated topic, leading to abortion being so stigmatized in society. For the women going through with the abortion, this stigma tends to lead to feelings of guilt and shame. Many experience the abortion as a heavy emotional and psycological strain before, during and after the procedure. The nurses have an active part to play in medical abortion procedures in hospitals. They oversee the patient’s physical and psycological needs regarding the abortion. This being said, many still feel that their psycological needs take second seat next to their physical ones.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to shed light on the emotional and psycological strain the women experience during a medically induced abortion in Norwegian hospitals. Furthermore, it aims to see how nurses can focus more on the psycological aspects of abortion, and not just the physiological aspects.
Method: This study reviews seven qualitative and quantitative studies and looks at their results.
Result: The studies show that the information patients are getting is either not enough or incomplete. Not having the full picture is a factor in giving the abortion patients increased levels of anxiety towards the abortion. The stigma surrounding abortion would often lead to the women experiencing heavy guilt and shame towards their choice. This would furthermore lead them to isolate themselves emotionally and increase their psycological strain. Negative attitudes towards abortion coming from the healthcare workers lead to the patients losing faith in the care they were receiving from the nurses. The nurses’ heavy workload led them to not prioritize the psycological needs of their patients. Some nurses reported of emotionally distancing themselves to handle the work, and this was also a reason for them not prioritizing the patients’ feelings and emotions.
Conclusion: A non-judgemental and confirming attitude towards the patients’ choice would lead to a more open dialogue between patients and nurses. This would further strengthen the bond between the two and allow for the patient to express their feelings. With more knowledge of how the organization works and prioritizes, the nurses would become inepter in managing the heavy workload. Clear and understandable information from the nurses could help reduce the psychological stress associated with all stages of the abortion.
