Number of pages: 47 words: 7673Background, aim and research questionIt is estimated that approximately 22,000 people in Norway live with a stoma. A stoma can affect the patient's quality of life and psychosocial needs. In line with the health-promoting function, it is the nurse's responsibility to ensure that the issues and challenges faced by the patient with a stoma are addressed. It is stated in the literature that patients rarely bring up sexual issues unless healthcare professionals initiate a dialogue. We aim to shed light on the sexual health of patients with an intestinal stoma and enhance understanding of this topic through our research question:How can nurses contribute to promoting sexual health in patients with an intestinal stoma?MethodThe literature study includes both qualitative and quantitative research articles. Seven research articles are included from the databases PubMed and CINAHL. The articles were found through systematic searches using keywords such as stoma, ostomy, colostomy, ileostomy, sexual health, sexuality, quality of life, nursing care, and health promotion.ResultsPatients living with a stoma face various physical and psychological challenges that can affect their sexuality and quality of life. The literature revealed several key themes, including self-image and body image, information, resilience, nurses' competence and communication about sexuality, individual needs and tailored support, partner acceptance and relational challenges, as well as independence and psychosocial factors.ConclusionBy providing guidance, involvement, and support, it is possible to increase patient autonomy and thereby promote sexual health in patients with a stoma. A holistic and person-centered approach in nursing practice is crucial for individualized care.
