Abstract
This bachelor thesis studies how the affordances of social media facilitates for right-wingextremist online environments. In recent years, the Western world has seen increasing activityin right-wing extremism, and studies indicate that social media has become an arena forrecruitment and radicalization. This thesis is based on the theory of the affordances of socialmedia, more specifically the possibilities for action that social media offers, in order to shedlight on, and find a connection between social media and the right-wing extremist onlineenvironment. The analysis focuses on the connection between social media and right-wingextremist online environments. The analysis focuses on affordances such as anonymity andavailability. Furthermore, the concept of affordance is linked to various right-wing extremistonline environments, such as the sharing and use of memes, and phenomena such as echochambers and filter bubbles, a result of user-controlled and algorithmic personalization. The result of the analysis shows that the affordances of social media facilitate for right-wing extremist online environments, this because social media has become an arena favorable for recruitment and radicalization through the different possibilities social media offers.
